The Fez Golf Tournament - Korineum Golf Club - North Cyprus
On Sunday July 20th at 7-40 am, the Korineum Golf Club Captain “Geordie” Brian Young struck the opening shot in The Fez Birkdale Cup.
The day started in controversial fashion, with one of the pre tournament favourites Jamie Silbery failing to show after losing his phone whilst discussing tactics with Korineum pro Michael Jones well into the early hours the preceding night, a session which resulted in Jones missing his tee time and having to go off last.
The format was stableford with full handicap allowance with a twist. Each player had to nominate a joker hole before start of play in which he would receive double points. This was to prove decisive as eventual winner Steve Giblin chose the par 5 11th hole where he rolled in a twenty foot putt for birdie to score an impressive 8 points. Steve’s total of 40 points was enough for him to win the much coveted first prize of a barrel of beer.

Back at the Fez Gazza Awards Steve 1st Prize (a barrel of Efes Beer)
Steve typically chose Efes as most of the players drink Carlsberg, so he would not have to give much away.
Second position went to Martin Harris with 38 points, who played with his dad Dave on his 72nd birthday. He won two tickets with three course meal to the Time Machine Cabaret show.
Third went to Steve Donaghy who recorded two birdies in his 37 point haul, with David Hope Robertson (defending champion) and Storming Norman Swainsbury tied for 4th on 36 points.
After the golf it was back to The Fez Restaurant where many of the players were joined by their wives and girlfriends for a three course Sunday roast.
Many stayed on a the bar to watch the drama unfold at Birkdale on the big projector screen and witness Padraig Harrington win the Claret Jug, (but no efes).
Neil Silbery won the sweepstake and 250 ytl with Howard Hobson second winning 150ytl.
All in all it was a great day, please look out for details of our next tournament.
